Faceplate mounting versus between centres

Afternoon all. Spent the morning turning a bit of macrocarpa between centres and got me thinking about how folks approach their mounting. Do you tend to rely on a screw chuck and faceplate right away, or do you always start between centres to establish your tenon first? Measure twice before you sink that screw, that is my motto.
